"The customs officers want the government to almost double their pay to about 4,000 zlotys ($1,620) a month. Their strike follows pay protests by miners, teachers and nurses, all public sector workers trying to catch up with the private sector. Customs staff say the 9 percent rise planned by the government in the 2008 budget is not good enough.
Poland's eastern border with Belarus, Ukraine and Russia became the European Union's external frontier in December when Poland and eight other eastern EU members joined the bloc's border-free Schengen zone."
